Running between the refreshing pool and the calm, clear water of the Caribbean Sea, separated only by a sandy lane (you can't really even call it a road), my family discovered a new destination that truly offers beach vacation perfection.

And after this year of global pandemic, it felt soooooo good to explore and experience something new again.
Isla Holbox is located about 2 hours north of the Cancun airport in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and accessed via a public ferry that runs every 30 minutes throughout the day. Yes, getting there is a bit of a journey, but as with most special places around the world, the journey is worth it.
Read on to discover this bohemian island off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and contact us to get started planning your next family beach vacation!
Ser Casasandra
This lovely boutique hotel is, by far, the best place to stay on Isla Holbox. It is perfectly located in the middle of the main beach area, so you can easily walk to restaurants that dot the calm beach. You also have access to their beach club and restaurant, so you can charge food and drinks to your hotel account.

The atmosphere at Casasandra is so friendly and warm and open. We immediately found ourselves becoming fast friends with other guests - always the sign of a wonderful hotel that provides a warm, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Here the roads are made of sand and transportation is via golf cart. Rent a golf cart to explore the island on your own - or flag down one of the golf cart taxis that serve the island.
Whale Sharks (and other adventure!)
The main draw to Isla Holbox is the opportunity to enjoy calm, clear water, and a lovely white sand beach without crowds or chaos. The island is charming, super safe, and really an ideal destination if you love the beach. (And don't miss sunset hour - the very best time to be at the beach listening to music, kids love the many swings at the beach bars!)

And during the summer months, the impressively massive Whale Sharks migrate past Isla Holbox, making this a perfect destination to check this wildlife encounter off your bucket list. It's a full day, best for kids 10 and older, but a great adventure and incredibly impressive!

All. The. Food.
For such a remote location we were surprised and delighted by the culinary options available across the island. We enjoyed perfect Mexican tacos on the beach, fresh sushi and inspired dishes in beautiful courtyard restaurants.

Spending 4 nights on Isla Holbox is a great combination with a few nights at the end of the trip at a larger resort in the Riviera Maya.
