Cultural Meeting Point in Medellin
Medellín is Colombia's second largest city and is nestled in the Aburrá Valley of the Andes Mountains. It was founded in 1616 but remained a small, under-the-radar locale until the Colombian coffee boom.
Capital of Antioquia province, a fertile region famous for its coffee plantations and its flower farms, for its orchids and butterflies, it is known as the City of Eternal Spring for its idyllic climate. Everywhere you turn there seem to be new things happening.
And don't miss a ride on the city's cable cars - perhaps the best part of Medellin’s new transport system. Connecting to the metro, the cable cars are the answer to the steep streets of the labyrinthine barrios that climb the mountain sides above the city centre. They carry passengers aloft above the rooftops and the congested lanes in glass pods.
Cartagena
Next, head up to the colonial city of Cartagena on the north Caribbean coast of Colombia. This beautiful, historical city's old walled city remains, as does the ancient fortresses, including the Spanish-built Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. This Old Town is a Unesco World Heritage Site – a maze of cobbled alleys, balconies covered in bougainvillea, and massive churches that cast their shadows across leafy plazas.
Stroll through the Old Town day and night. Soak up the atmosphere, pausing to ward off the brutal heat and humidity in one of the city's many excellent bars and restaurants.
The Islands!
Finally, end your adventure with a few days on a Caribbean island. The Rosario archipelago contains some 30 islands, about 45km from Cartagena on the Caribbean coast and easily reached by boat.
Sun soaked and rich in culture, Colombia's dramatic Caribbean coastline is its dazzling crown, capping the country with myriad ecosystems. The islands include the San Bernardo National Park, which is famous for its coral reefs and seagrasses and home to more than 170 species of fish. The natural aquarium on San Martín de Pajarales island is much visited too.
