5 Cool + Unique Family Experiences in Europe

We're all eager for Europe to reopen post-pandemic. While many destinations have safely reopened in recent months, Europe remains in a pretty strict lockdown situation (as of January 2021).

As the vaccine rolls out across Europe, we expect these countries to begin reopening later this spring and into early Summer 2021.

Many travelers rescheduled 2020 travel to the summer of 2021, and with lots of pent up demand we expect Europe to be vibrant and bustling this summer! If you're considering a trip to Europe in 2021 or beyond, NOW is the time to be planning.

In the meantime, here are 5 super cool and unique experiences for families in Europe to get you dreaming about the possibilities.

Via Ferrata in France

A via ferrata is a protected climbing route - originally created in the Alps but now there are several around the world. Via Ferrata gives you the experience of rock climbing without the risk or technical know-how. It’s the perfect activity for adventurous families and groups as no previous experience is required!

Climb to great heights on fixed rung systems that wind their way up rock faces in the French Alps.

Routes are graded based on a combination of their difficulty and their length. While less physically demanding than rock climbing, you still get the buzz of being up high, and you’ll find completing a via ferrata a hugely rewarding experience! Add this to your bucket list!

Rifugio Lunch in the Italian Dolomites

A rifugio is basically a mountain hut, but like many things Italian, is done with unique style and class. Some of these are day-use restaurants, and others offer basic overnight accommodations.

Our favorite rifugios are in the Italian Dolomites. Spend a day hiking in the mountains and enjoy a gourmet lunch in the middle of nowhere!

The term “rifugi” translates to mountain refuge, and the Dolomites offer a vast network of these mountain huts located throughout the region. Ranging from simple and rugged to more comfortable amenities, they all offer suitable and welcome shelter to walkers, mountaineers, skiers and anyone desiring to get up close and personal with the beautiful terrain of the Dolomite Mountains.

A few of the more popular locations, Cortina D’Ampezzo and Rifugio Averau, are havens for hungry travelers, serving up Italian specialties like pappardelle con fughi (butterfly pasta with mushrooms), macaroni and bean soup. Several Italian rifugios have even received noteworthy Michelin stars for their delectable dishes!

Private Graffiti Masterclass in East London

How about getting an introduction on London’s underground artistic scene, and learning how to master the art of spray-painting?

Head to East London with a private guide, a renowned street artist, to check out the best and most impressive street art masterpieces of the area. East London is where it all happens, and since street art is more of an ephemeral artform (one day, paintings appear, and then disappear again under the work of another artist) there is always something new to see.

After a 1-hour walking tour, head into a workshop where your family will work on individual creations. After some quick instructions on how to use spray-paint and how to create certain effects, try your hand at wall art before working on your individual masterpieces which you get to take home as a fun keepsake from your family trip. Check out our complete London sample itinerary here.

Island Hopping Croatia's Mediterranean Coast

Proclaimed to have the purest waters in the Mediterranean, the Adriatic inspires the discerning traveler to appreciate life’s simple pleasures: dining on freshly caught fish, biking through olive groves and swimming in a crystalline sea. Envision past Venetian splendor, red-roofed cliff-top towns and swathes of forested hillsides. It’s a place where life slows down, in the best possible way.

Learn to Cook Traditional Paella in Spain

Paella is certainly the most famous Spanish dish. And what better way to enjoy a great paella than by preparing it yourself!

In the comfort of a private kitchen in the heart of Barcelona, meet your private, experienced chef and follow their instructions in order to prepare a great-tasting, traditional Spanish paella. While cooking the rice, chicken and fresh seafood, enjoy this unique, family-friendly and hands-on cooking experience.

Paella is not the only traditional dish you will prepare. This is a 3-course meal, so you will also prepare a classic Spanish starter such as gazpacho, for example, and a dessert like crema catalana, which is similar to crème brulée!

At the end of the class, everyone gets to sit at the dining table to eat the traditional seafood paella you have prepared! Simply delicious!
